Album: Override My Day
Year: 1999
Genre: Pop Punk / Modern Rock
Never heard of Ex Number Five?
That’s seriously unfortunate.
This band out of Jersey has been kicking around since the 90s. Now, before you think I found them way back
then, I didn’t. I discovered them
through the band The Fire Still Burns which contained ex-Ensign, Vision and
Lifetime members (see a review elsewhere on this blog!). Vocalist Alf Bartone fronts both bands and my
admiration for his vocals compelled me to do some research on him, leading me
to this awesome band he’s fronted for 20 years now. Musically, Ex Number Five lies somewhere
between latter day Face To Face and the amped up side of Bob Mould’s most
recent solo efforts. You can even catch a 90s emo groove from time to time. They generate a wonderful and powerful
melodic punk / modern rock blend and encompass a huge sound with all
instruments pushed right to the front.
This is not some wimpy indie rock outing. Yet, it’s Mr. Bartone’s vocals that really
sell this band. His melody-infused grit
pairs perfectly with the commanding music and hooks you into their web. I highly suggest giving it a listen.
Listen to "Inconceivable" here.
