Album:
The Giant
Genre:
Funeral Doom Metal
In
head-to-head tie with Nashville’s Loss, Germany’s Ahab is my favorite band in
the funeral doom genre. Their music lumbers under the weight of its own
heaviness and is coupled perfectly with an atypical love for oceanic literature
which drives the lyrics. The Giant sees the band pull
back a bit on the upfront brutality of their first two landmark releases and
create a record full of mood-building tension that keeps the listener riveted
to what comes next. The vocals wander into the ever-so-dangerous
“clean” territory on this record, but there is no denying it isn’t a stellar
move and adds another powerful dimension to the band. Hopefully this doesn’t alarm funeral doom
purists as Ahab demonstrate their ability to leave craters with their massive
sound while dragging their instruments through a black, deep tarpit. The ultra-slow pace isn’t for everyone, but
if you’re looking to hear what is some of the heaviest music on the planet, The
Giant is a great place to start.
