Genre: Post-Punk
If I were to lie
to any post-punk, goth rock fan and say, “Hey, check out this group called The
Bellicose Minds from way back in the day,” I’m pretty sure they would react
with a stunned look and wonder how they didn’t have their finger on the pulse
of this band. The truth: The Bellicose
Minds is a new band. The reality: They
sound as if they are capable of time travel.
These talented musicians have done their homework. You can sense they’ve spent hordes of time
spinning the records of Christian Death, Bauhaus, Southern Death Cult, Part 1,
Fields Of The Nephilim and Modern English.
The influences seep through their moon-tanned skin without sounding
contrived or like a facsimile of the originals.
A ton of credit goes to the band’s diligence toward preserving the
tones, instrumentation, effects and feel of 1980s post-punk music. The guitar and bass work on this record is
excellent, uncomplicated, and is what really drives the songs.
When the two instruments coalesce they are quite powerful, but when they
sever from one another, the contrast sets the mood and the overall melody. The vocals are delivered in a
baritone range and often rhythmically mimic drum patterns and bass lines,
breaking off at just the right times to deliver the hook. I'm impressed. Fans of the aforementioned bands take note
because The Spine is as good as it gets for modern day post-punk.
Listen to "Bloody Hands" here.
