Album: Crush
Year: 2012
Genre: Goth / Post-Punk
What a
cool record! Talk about all over the place. I believe one of the more difficult tasks in
music is pulling influence from bands that really shouldn’t work well together
and making something solid. Sure, artists
can grab from anything they like, but can they make cohesive? It’s a tougher task than it sounds and tons
of bands have failed while trying to be too creative and end up completely annihilating their
songs for the sake of originality. Italian
(now UK!) goth punks Mescaline Babies take their love for Sex Pistols, System
Of A Down, “Only Theater Of Pain” era Christian Death, and a light sprinkling
of Bauhaus influence to tape and have come up with a simple, yet very effective
collection of songs that focus on the more aggressive nature of the dark side. Each song displays its individuality yet
Mescaline Babies are able tie the record together to sound like an
interconnected unit. The goth and
post-punk elements are definitely front and center, but you can just hear the
punk and nu metal traces in their DNA creeping out at times. On paper, that sounds like a train wreck, but
they make it work have been able to develop and unique sound for
themselves. I have to admit, my
description doesn’t do them any type of justice at all. Bands such as Mescaline Babies are bad to
review and much better to experience on your own.
