Album: Passiondale
Year: 2009
Genre: Death Metal
This is
a prime example of one of those albums that I should listen to much, much more. I have so many of those. Owning an overabundance of music is not a bad
problem to have, but it causes the issue of incredible albums not getting their
due. God Dethroned’s catalog is full of
strong albums, but their 2009 beast Passiondale is a clinic in brutality and is my favorite death metal
album of that year. What makes it so
good? It simply comes down to
songwriting. God Dethroned always had
the extreme sound, the speed and the talent, yet, up until Passiondale, their
albums are easily exchanged with other bands in the genre that are just as
talented. Getting lost in the shuffle is
an easy accomplishment to achieve in the death metal world, whereas, being recognized
for individuality is much more difficult. Well, Passiondale cured that problem. Not only did Henri Sattler improve the riffs
tenfold on this record, but the songwriting is also perfectly composed for the
extreme nature of the music. Everything
flows seamlessly and is an ideal balance of complexity and barbarity. Death metal doesn’t get much
better than this.
