Khoma came as a huge surprise to me because I think I know everything and completely judged this band using usless attributes. I stumbled across Khoma on their second record, The Second Wave. The cover had dead trees on it and they had a misspelled, sort of brooding name, so I immediately thought, "This is going to be black metal. Cool!" If I would have noticed it was on Roadrunner, a label I haven't purchased anything on in years, I guess I would have known better. I got the record and was knocked over. Little did I know Khoma was an experimental band with a heavier, slightly depressing sound full of dynamic musical swells that vary from minimal, minor key interludes building up to majestic walls guitars and synthesizers, with vocals that have an almost dream pop quality to them. I was happy. Yes, I know I can research what they sound like before buying it, but where's the fun in that? Trying to paint Khoma into a genre corner is tough. I've read reviews that mention Anathema, Deftones, Radiohead and Muse when speaking of Khoma. I can see that. Elements of post-rock, shoegaze, pop, post-punk weave in and out to create a unique listening experience. I'm definitely a fan.
