Song: Preacher’s Confession
Album: The Original Group
Year: 1990
Genre: Punk / Gothic
If 80s, LA-styled punk rock with an added
unhealthy dose of gloom sounds enticing,
then The Flower Leperds are perfect for you.
Early on, punk and goth demonstrated they could share a common thread,
as proven by the likes of Christian Death, Part 1, 45 Grave, Trial (not the
hardcore band) and initial Cure releases. While Flower Leperds leaned more to
the punk side while traversing this musical tightrope, they definitely weren’t
afraid to throw in some minor chords and disturbing lyrics to bring everybody
down. While never achieving the success
or legendary status a few of the aforementioned bands did, Flower Leperds
continued to release records through the late 80 before disbanding. Although Tony (Adolescent, Cadena, Montana,
whatever you want to call him) was added for the last two releases, I find
myself rarely listening to those records and prefer the raw sound of the early
recordings. Unfortunately the
productivity of the initial line-up wasn’t exactly mind blowing and they didn’t
put out anything close to a full length release. But, fret not! The record called, The Original Group from
1990 compiles the self-titled 7”, compilation songs and other odds and
ends. It is highly recommended.
