Album: Mind Wars
Year: 1988
Genre: Thrash Metal
Maximum effort is going to be made to avoid a long-winded, immensely wordy review that has “fanboy” stamped all over it. Mind Wars is the sophomore, and final, album by SoCal thrashers Holy Terror. It is a pinnacle release for metal. While technically proficient as any of their peers, Holy Terror’s approach on this record was unrelenting. Yet, for all the teeth this barbarous animal bares, a melodic theme is displayed through every song. The music is fearless and distinctive in a genre that was quickly becoming a cheap facsimile of itself; which was a major contributing factor in its eventual demise. Holy Terror's swansong far surpasses their speed metal-oriented debut and leaves nothing on the table. Every riff is superb, every rhythm is calculated and the vocal are delivered with an ingenuity not previously heard in thrash. Mind Wars is a release metal fans should voraciously seek. For whatever reason, Holy Terror didn't garner the popularity their high caliber of their music deserved. Within the last 15 years, various independent labels recognized the importance and talent of the band and have reissued both records on CD and LP. Now there’s no reason for them to be overlooked again.
